The latest volume of Kimi ni Todoke, #16, went on sale on May 11, bringing the manga’s total number of copies printed to over 20 million. It has its 10 millionth copy published in June, 2010, when its 11th volume came out.
Kimi ni Todoke is a romance shoujo manga by Karuho Shiina. It tells the story of Sawako Kuronuma, a girl nicknamed Sadako (from The Ring) because of her long black hair and pale skin makes her appear gloomy. She has always been feared and misunderstood because of her appearance. When her idol, the popular boy Shouta Kazehaya, begins talking with her, everything changes. Slowly, but surely, a sweet love blossoms between the two as they overcome circumstances and obstacles that stand in their way.
The manga began serialization in 2005 in Shueisha’s Bessatsu Margaret. It won the Best Shoujo Manga award in the 32nd Annual Kodansha Manga Award. Two anime adaptations were aired in Japan. And a live-action adaptation premiered in Japan in 2010.
